About this Wiki on Rotary District 3131

Welcome to the knowledge base for the Rotarian and by the Rotarian especially of the Rotary District 3131. However Rotarians in India and other parts of the world might find many knowledge snippets interesting. Any visitor can read the information provided on the wiki, but the Rotarians registered with the District Portal have special privilege. About District 3131

On 1st July 2008 Rotary District 3131 was formed by bifurcation of RD 3130. RD 3131 comprises of the Rotary clubs in the revenue districts of Pune and Raigad in the state of Maharashtra, India. The RD 3130 itself had been carved out of RD 313 in Rotary year 1981-82. You can refer to the list of associated RI Officers since the we were Rotary District 313.

Clubs and locations

Rotary Club of Poona was chartered on 10th June 1936, sponsored by Rotary Club of Bombay. This is the oldest club in the district. It took 15 years past independence to add a club in these revenue districts. RC Panvel became the first club in Raidgad district (then Kolaba district) which was sponsored by RC Kalyan and charted on 16th June 1960. Other clubs formed in this decade were Poona North (7th Oct '60), Khopoli (25th June '60) and Poona West (21st June '69). In the decade of 70's Rotary was introduced in agriculturally dominated areas like Narayngaon (29th March '71) and Baramati (26th June '74) In the decade of 80's more than 16 clubs now in RD 3131 were formed and the pace accelerated in 90's by formation of 23 clubs followed by 31 clubs have charted so far in the first decade of the new millennium. Today there are 83 clubs in the district with more than 3400 Rotarians.

Pen Hirkani and Pune Chandani Chawk are Rotary clubs with 100% lady Rotarians.

RD 3131 has a notable presence in majority of Tehsils of both these districts, but primarily concentrated in the cities of Pune and Panvel.

The city of Pune is eighth largest city in India and is known for education institutes and IT industry but is also cultural centre of Maharashtra. Khadki, Pune Camp, Pune Airport form significant part of Southern Command of Indian armed forces. The twin town of Pimpri-Chinchwad is a sister city of Pune and famous for world renowned industries like Tata Motors that introduced Nano car. Talegaon a former princely state has turned in to a industrial town due to it's proximity to Pune-Pimpri-Chichwad. Rajgurunagar is famous as the birth place of the Indian revolutionary Rajguru. Chakan is emerging as major economic zone. While Baramati is primarily agriculture town with historical heritage, Narayangaon is becoming backbone for Indian wine industry due to it's pollution free vineyards. Junner is another historical place at the foothills of Fort Shivaneri, the birthplace of Maratha warrior king Chatrapti Shivaji. Manchar is a town with very rich heritage and has many historical places to visit around. to Dehu is the town of great Indian Saint Tukaram who has influenced many Hindu sects. Daund is a major junction for Indian Railiways. Bhor tehsil has famous Rajgad fort, but it has a very raye privilege along with Pune (Poona) , i.e. there are Martian craters named after them. Lonavala is a very famous hill station, almost equidistant from Mumbai and Pune at the boundaries of Pune and Raigad districts.

Panvel is geographically very close to Mumbai and is gateway to Konkan region. Karjat as a major railway junction before ghat section on route between Mumbai and Pune has become an extended suburb of Mumbai, where as Khopoli is an industrial town. Uran has evolved from a fishing village to a special economy zone. Pen is famous for it's Lord Ganesh idols in India and abroad. Mahad has a personality of its own due to its mythological, historical, social and cultural importance. Shrivardhan an oldest town in Maharashtra has many beaches and other tourist places in proximity.
